We receive dozens of this type of bible every year. A carved family heirloom that has done its job protecting the text, but the binding needs some TLC. We restored and preserved all original covers and spine with an underlay of new leather. See how we resurrected this beautiful 19th century family bible.
First step is to clean off
old material from the spine.
Spine is cleaned down to bare
paper, ready for fresh glue.
Newly made headbands that
are antiqued with dye.
New satin bookmark added
and a fresh layer of PVA glue.
New headbands added to
the head and tail of the spine.
New linen is laid across the
spine and whip stitched to
front and back.
New silk end papers are added
and a black cloth hinge.
Leather is measured out and
custom dyed to match original.
Original board leather is lifted so
new leather can lie underneath.
Leather laid across the spine.
Old leather is refurbished with
combination of dye and conditioner.
Original spine is laid over the
new spine leather and raised bands
are emphasized.
